Measuring Instructions

Select How Shade(s) Will Be Mounted

Determine the area to be covered, and decide where brackets or fascia/endcaps will be attached. FlexShades are custom fabricated for each window, and must be measured accurately.

  • An Inside Mounted shade provides a clean, tailored look. Inside mount is used when the window shade is installed inside the window opening/jamb. However, inside mounting is not recommended for a window that is not squared.
  • An Outside Mounted shade hangs outside the window opening either on the wood frame or above and beyond the wood frame. It can make a small window appear larger, hide unsightly molding or be used when the window opening is too shallow to allow an inside mount. Outside Mounted shades are typically sized by providing width (outside of hardware) and height measurements for entire product but may be sized alternatively using Cloth Measurement method (see below for details).

IMPORTANT:

  • Be careful to allow for any irregularity which will interfere with the operation of the shade (i.e. handles, irregular trim, locks, or an opening that is not square or plumb).
  • Please be sure to specify measurements as Inside Measurement (IM), Outside Measurement (OM), or Cloth Measurement (CM) on order forms.
How To Ensure Accurate Measurement: Inside Mounted Shades

insideMountWhen Ordering—Provide Inside Measurements (IM) for Inside Mounted shades:

  1. Measure the width of the opening (at top of window), providing Draper with the EXACT window opening width. DO NOT MAKE ANY DEDUCTIONS for bracketing or mounting— Draper will make the necessary deductions.
  2. Measure the height of the opening, providing Draper with the EXACT window opening height at the window’s shortest point.

NOTE: All paper and electronic forms offer a space or check box for specifying this measurement type.

How To Ensure Accurate Measurement: Outside Mounted Shades

When OrderingProvide Outside Measurements (OM) for Outside Mounted shades (where providing overall product size is desired):

Measure the width of the window, specifying the EXACT width and height you want the product to be, including headbox, fascia, and hardware. Draper will make your product to the exact size you specify. Adding overlap to a shade increases privacy and decreases light leaks.

NOTE: All paper and electronic forms offer a space or check box for specifying this measurement type.

When Ordering—Provide Cloth Measurements (CM) for Outside Mounted shades (where providing overall shade cloth size is desired):

  1. Measure the width of the area desired for coverage, specifying the EXACT fabric width and overall shade height.
  2. Do not make any additions or deductions from your measurements. Draper will fabricate the overall product to your EXACT fabric requirements.

Cloth Measure is used to define the finished size of the shade fabric. This measurement is most often used to ensure the fabric covers a specific area. The hardware for the shade will be wider than the fabric, depending on the product. Cloth measure must only be used for Outside Mounted shades.

NOTE: All paper and electronic forms offer a space or check box for specifying this measurement type.

Measuring Corner or Bay Windows

Be sure to provide width and height measurements for each window. It is recommended that bead chains be placed to side of shade opposite corner(s). A larger than normal light gap is typical for corner or bay window installed shades.

NOTE: Fascia, custom valances and cornices can increase light gap between shades.
